Amos Yoder

“I’ll be back in a little bit,” Amos called to Mercy as he tried to hide the large bag beneath the tarp in the back of the wagon.

“Do you need a hand?” His daughter set down the feed bucket she carried and started walking over.

“No. I’m all set. Thank you for asking.” Amos covered the tarp with a shovel and climbed onto the wagon seat.

Mercy hurried over. She glanced at the tarp and gazed up at him. “I don’t mind helping. You’ve been working in the backfield a lot lately. I can help. I want too.” She leaned against the buckboard.

He gazed down at his brown-eyed daughter, and his chest hurt. Mercy was Amos’ only child, and he loved her more than he could ever express. Keeping her away from what he had to do hardened his heart. “Don’t make me repeat myself. I’ve got work to do, and it’s not going to get done sitting here jawing. I’ll be back later.”

He clicked the reins, and Mercy stepped back from the wagon as it moved. She said nothing, but he saw it in her face. She suspected something. What, he could only guess, but the disappointed expression on her face was like a punch in the gut.

There was nothing he could do about it now. He couldn’t get Mercy involved in what he was doing. Who knows how this was going to work out? Right now, all he could see coming from it was bad.

The ride to the backfield did nothing to ease his troubled mind. There was already so much grief and misery in the world. He didn’t think he could take more, but now he found himself hiding two human beings. What had he become? A jailer? How long could he hide that face from his family? What would he do if they found out?

Amos unhitched Pecan, then lifted the hefty bag out of the back of the wagon. Stopping twice to catch his breath, he wanted to hurry, but the bag slowed him down. He dropped into the hole at the base of the cliff. Trudging along the damp corridor, he followed it until he reached the underground bunker. He switched hands again as the heavy bag dug into his flesh. At the large metal door, he stopped. Setting the bag down, he leaned against the cold surface. The weight of guilt was a heavy burden to bear. Mercy knew something was wrong. He saw it in her eyes. She was a bright girl and too curious for her own good.

Turning the handle, he tugged open the door, and cool air whooshed out along with the pleasant smell of earth. He missed gardening. With how long it was taking trying to get information out of Jesse, Amos was letting his garden go. There was so much weeding to do, but he longed to do it for the serenity it gave him. When he was tending to his garden, he felt like Adam taking care of Eden.

But Adam didn’t have to deal with weeds and thorns.
